How to Prevent Electrical Fires

Jul 07, 2021

Electrical fires can be scary and are definitely something to be cautious about. Each year in the United States, arcing faults are responsible for starting more than 28,000 home fires, killing and injuring hundreds of people, and causing over $700 million in property damage. That’s why it is important to listen to recommendations given by your electrician.

Keep your home safer by following these steps:

1. Keep appliances that produce heat unplugged when you are not using them

Heat producing appliances such as curling irons, kettles, and toasters can malfunction and catch on fire if they are not caught early enough. Keeping these appliances unplugged can prevent a fire from starting.

2. Don’t overcrowd outlets (or use extension cords permanently)

Each individual outlet in your home was designed to carry a certain amount of electricity. When overloading it with too many extension cords or surge protectors a fire can start. It’s important to only use these items when completely necessary and for short periods of time.

3. Follow instructions that come with electrical appliances

This one may seem obvious, but it's important to know exactly what the rules of your electrical appliances are. Make sure to read the manuals to ensure that you aren’t using the appliances for longer than intended by the manufacturer.

4. Keep flammable objects away from electrical outlets

Do not place any flammable materials near your electrical outlets. Things like curtains, sofas, and bedding can all catch fire if there is a spark in the electrical outlet.

5. Consider updating your homes electrical service

Modern wiring materials such as copper have a lower chance of catching fire as opposed to their older counterparts. Updating your electrical service can give you peace of mind when it comes to your home safety.

6. Lastly, don’t ignore the warning signs of electrical malfunction

If you experience any of these warning signs, contact an electrician immediately and stop using the outlet.

Warning signs:

  • Cord or outlet feels hot to the touch
  • Flickering light fixture even when the bulb is replaced
  • Electrical spark or shock when you plug in appliances
  • Burnt outlets
  • Burning smell when items are plugged in
  • Breakers frequently tripping
